Summary

Spanning Prohibition-era Montana, the Pacific Northwest, Alaska, New Zealand, wartime London, and modern-day Los Angeles, Great Circle tells the unforgettable story of a daredevil female aviator determined to chart her own course in life, at any cost。

After being rescued as infants from a sinking ocean liner in 1914, Marian and Jamie Graves are raised by their dissolute uncle in Missoula, Montana。 There--after encountering a pair of barnstorming pilots passing through town in beat-up biplanes--Marian commences her lifelong love affair with flight。 At fourteen she drops out of school and finds an unexpected and dangerous patron in a wealthy bootlegger who provides a plane and subsidizes her lessons, an arrangement that will haunt her for the rest of her life, even as it allows her to fulfill her destiny: circumnavigating the globe by flying over the North and South Poles。

A century later, Hadley Baxter is cast to play Marian in a film that centers on Marian's disappearance in Antarctica。 Vibrant, canny, disgusted with the claustrophobia of Hollywood, Hadley is eager to redefine herself after a romantic film franchise has imprisoned her in the grip of cult celebrity。 Her immersion into the character of Marian unfolds, thrillingly, alongside Marian's own story, as the two women's fates--and their hunger for self-determination in vastly different geographies and times--collide。 Epic and emotional, meticulously researched and gloriously told, Great Circle is a monumental work of art, and a tremendous leap forward for the prodigiously gifted Maggie Shipstead。

Apart from being about 200 pages too long, this is an engaging book。 Some of the writing is excellent with some lovely metaphors, and I enjoyed the contemporary story as much as the story about Marian。 Overall not a bad read。

It was quite a mission to complete Great Circle and at times I felt I was reading in a Great Circle! The plotline is ambitious and contains parallel stories that span a century。 It was well written, contained detailed and interesting research on early aviation and the history of female pilots, and is choc full of vivid descriptions and character development。 However, I felt a sense of accomplishment and relief when I finished the book which indicates to me that the book was overly long winded。

I don't understand why current literary fiction celebrates writing where female victims have little personality, where all men are the same female hating individuals and their attitudes are all easily explained by 'they're afraid of women's success', and where a woman's passion needs to always be pushed way back so that her rapes and infatuations are described in painful detail, while her technical passions and careers get short-shrift。 I also don't understand why post me-too fiction cannot crea I don't understand why current literary fiction celebrates writing where female victims have little personality, where all men are the same female hating individuals and their attitudes are all easily explained by 'they're afraid of women's success', and where a woman's passion needs to always be pushed way back so that her rapes and infatuations are described in painful detail, while her technical passions and careers get short-shrift。 I also don't understand why post me-too fiction cannot create a genuine, deep female friendship without turning it into a queer experience。 I love diverse characters, but it's like authors are afraid to just have friends on a page。 Friendship is powerful! More powerful than flimsy love often。I am so disappointed with what western contemporary literary fiction considers 'a strong female。' I've read abused female characters with more personality and grit in older and eastern literature。 Marian Graves, a fictional aviator passionate about all things engine as a kid had no personality in my eyes。 How does someone so good at flying ends up being described as 75% victim and only 25 % a navigator? Perhaps it was hard to get technical details about flying in those years, and the author instead did her research on the history of aviation。 A male author would have written a lot about engines and airplane parts, would have probably placed a lot more scenes in the cockpit。 And you know what? I would have loved that more。 It's a sad day when I realize that the reason why I keep returning to crime fiction is because female characters in crime fiction are ACTUALLY shown working and displaying their knowledge。 I'm tired, exhausted of rape scenes and pinning scenes that take pages and pages。 The novelty of this book, the flying, was so generic, it read like a Wikipedia entrance。 The modern female character-i。e。 the actress-was more believable。 Marian's mother was also believable。 Marian however was, to me, too obviously fake。 She read to me like she was created to drive a point, that men want to control every aspect of a woman's life and ultimately destroy it。 As a result, Marian made no sense。 She was ink on paper, not flesh and bones。 Her passion was so flat I wondered why she flew? Just showing her doing a loop every time she flies a plane is not enough to signify the intense burning love that must have consumed the daredevils and pioneers of early flight days。 Gauche sentences meant to deliver the feminist message abounded in the book。 I'm a hard core feminist with a career woman for a mother, and a career myself, and I was sick and tired of superficiality and the lack of character interrogation。 Examples of such sentences/paragraphs include: 1) Ruth writing to Marian to describe men preventing women pilots from flying and concluding that this happens because 'men are afraid that women will finally be able to make their own decisions'; 2) uncle Wallace losing the car on a bet because he worries that Mariam may become independent and achieve her dreams unless he deals her a blow; 3) "if Linderberg thinks it then he thinks it is true" and other similar statements about men being over confident, as if overconfidence is not a universal human affliction。 Don't get me wrong, I know men will actively stand in the way of an ambitious woman。 But this superficial explanation of why society is the way it is, about what drives such behavior, about human's resistance to change are just hilarious。 This is literary fiction not a pulp paper-back novel。 Why are we not actually spending time with the characters and asking deeper questions? Why are we just reading statements that belong in an essay about feminism? This is fiction!!!Don't get me wrong, there were some kernels of gold hidden in the story。 The discussion about the impossibility of knowing someone and the way people just 'connect the dots' of information to create an image which often has nothing to do with the real person was brilliant。 But then, instead of letting us try to decipher Marian and her fate we're spoon fed an unlikely ending and unlikely choices。 There was also some beautiful prose at time like this paragraph about life in England during the war "Slowly, Mariam had grown accustomed to the blackout, and to discerning the people moving through it like benthic fish, flashing their white gloves or phosphorescent boutonnieres。 She enjoyed the shock of passing from the outdoors darkness into a night-club, loud and humid, sparkling like the inside of a geode。 Here was the subterranean persistence of life。 The peaceful world had been burned away, but its roots were intact, safe down in the dark, nourished by booze, smoke and sweat"But overall I cannot recommend this novel。 It's overblown and I found it superficial。 It's propaganda over character development。 It's a bunch of love stories over some stories about early flight adventures。 And the ending! Because I couldn't find details about it, I'm including spoilers below, so that other readers who consider abandoning the book, can do so without wondering what finally happened: (view spoiler)[ Jamie, the vegetarian who all of a sudden discovered he can kill people (yeah, that made sense!), has an illegitimate child with the woman he meets in Seattle one summer and then dies when his military ship is sunk by friendly fire。 Ruth, Marian's love interest, dies in a plane crash。 Marian starts her pole-to-pole trip with Ruth's gay widower, Eddie。 They reach Antarctica, where Eddie realizes there's no way they'll survive the trip; he decides to stay behind and die on the ice rather than drown。 Marian's plane crashes but she decides to jump and fake her own death。 She lives for a while as a man, then as a woman again, and Caleb, her creepy childhood sweetheart turned good man in the end, is the only one to know。 She gives up flying because 'people keep dying around her so she must atone。' The actress playing Mariam in modern times finds out but keeps the secret。 (hide spoiler)] That ending was worthy of a conspiracy website, and I am tired of those。 。。。more

I liked the beginning, but I suspected I wouldn’t like it later, so I stopped reading it。 I really shouldn’t read Goodreads e views before reading, except that they fear good advice in the aggregate。 Life is too short to read books I don’t like。

I think I would have like this book more if it were a little shorter。 I enjoyed the historical aspects of the story, but there weren't many characters I really liked or cared about。 I had some issues with keeping the different time periods and names straight, but that says more about me than it does about the writer。 :) I think I would have like this book more if it were a little shorter。 I enjoyed the historical aspects of the story, but there weren't many characters I really liked or cared about。 I had some issues with keeping the different time periods and names straight, but that says more about me than it does about the writer。 :) 。。。more

It was at about page 100 that I truly committed myself to Great Circle。 And I’m so glad I did。 The fictional life of Marion Graves from start to finish had me intrigued。 The life of the present day actress (see, I don’t even remember her name) did not interest me or add much to telling。 But perhaps she was added to appeal to a younger reader。 ? A beautiful book。

A never-ending boring book, full of totally unsympathetic characters, jerky plot, and how did this get published? Spare me from any other junk from this author。

This dual novel checks off all my literary boxes! I adored the unabashedly cheeky heroines from both the historical and contemporary storylines。 I admire the author for tackling some pretty heavy duty topics such as the primordial soup of human sexuality with its many hidden landmines and the long-lasting negative effects of a patriarchal society。 Epic!

Really loved this book。 I did find it a bit too long。 I think I would have liked it as much, if not more (for brevity’s sake) if the Hollywood storyline had been removed completely。

Another one bites the dust。 I am about a third of the way through, but can’t bear the thought of another two thirds to go。 Interesting concept based on a an aviatrix’s diary, but I don’t like the time changes alternating between Marian and Hadley who will play Martian on screen。 Had it been shorter and just focussed on Marian Graves’ life, then I might have persevered。

I really enjoyed this book and would give it a 5 except for two minor issues。 I felt like the Hadley story line wasn't really needed! Most of the book I kept wondering when it would make sense to tie her in, was she a descendant? (no) I think Marion's story could have been told without Hadley。 I also think a trigger warning for Barkley's character might have been helpful。 This is a long book but it didn't feel drug out, it was an epic adventure with some great characters。 I really enjoyed this book and would give it a 5 except for two minor issues。 I felt like the Hadley story line wasn't really needed! Marian Graves appears fated to die by drowning。She and her twin brother Jamie are rescued from a sinking ocean liner by their father, captain of the ship, in 1914。 Their mother apparently is lost in the sinking, and their father is jailed for cowardice - because he chose to save his children rather than stay behind and save more of the liner's passengers。 Marian and Jamie are raised by their Uncle Wallace in Missoula, Montana。 Wallace is a painter and an art professor。 He is also a drunk and a g Marian Graves appears fated to die by drowning。She and her twin brother Jamie are rescued from a sinking ocean liner by their father, captain of the ship, in 1914。 Their mother apparently is lost in the sinking, and their father is jailed for cowardice - because he chose to save his children rather than stay behind and save more of the liner's passengers。 Marian and Jamie are raised by their Uncle Wallace in Missoula, Montana。 Wallace is a painter and an art professor。 He is also a drunk and a gambler。 He is kindly but neglectful, and the children grow up fairly savage, wandering the hills and forests around Missoula with their friend Caleb。 By age 14, Marian is running illegal liquor for local bootleggers。 A chance encounter with husband-and-wife stunt pilots inspires in her a burning desire to fly。 But when she meets someone who can help her achieve her goal, there is a price。 Decades later, Hadley Baxter's career as an actress has hit the skids。 After a career as a child TV star, she has starred in a popular series of fantasy/romance movies and is linked romantically with her costar, Olivier。 When she is unfaithful to Olivier in a very public and ugly way, she is fired from the series and endures the seething wrath of the series' passionate fans。 It looks like she may never act again - until a friend helps her get a gig playing Marian Graves in a biopic。 The language in this book is gorgeous。 In the chapter where Marian and Eddie are stranded in Antarctica, the barren coldness is so well-described that you can feel it。 At first, I thought that Marian and Hadley were opposites。 Marian is almost pathologically private, while Hadley's whole life has been a bid for public adulation。 But, the women are more alike than you initially think。 Hadley's life seems public, but she hides the inner Hadley。 And it is interesting that both women's mothers died by drowning。 Yet, the author never really explores these interesting similarities。 This 589-page book just kind of sprawls out and tells you Marian's life story - with some interludes about Hadley。 I couldn't tell what the book was actually about。 Marian seems to reach some peace in the end, but I never got the satisfying sense that she had worked towards something all of her life and finally achieved it - or didn't but was able to confront that。 Her life was interesting, but there didn't seem to be any point to it。 And the ending really strained credulity。 Also, I didn't like that Marian and Hadley are both rescued by men。 An older male admirer pays for Marian's flying lessons。 An older male friend gets Hadley the role of Marian。 It made both women seem helpless, and definitely less sympathetic to me。 I'd rather have seen them fight for their dreams。 Like my reviews?
